A 112:66 blowout win over Science City Jena’s farm team on Saturday evening paved the way to an early championship celebration for BBC COBURG. With two games to go and a 5-win lead in the standings, the 1. Regionalliga newcomers have clinched the title and will move up to 2. Bundesliga Pro B, the third tier of German basketball.
1,100 fans in HUK-COBURG arena saw their team deliver a championship-worthy chef d’oeuvre. Crisp ball movement, shooting accuracy, dominance in the paint – the Upper Franconians’ splendid performance turned 6th-placed Jena’s young squad into mere bystanders.
Jordan Burris, in particular, enjoyed an MVP-esque night: The sharpshooter from California connected on 8 of 13 attempts from – sometimes far – beyond the arc and finished with a season-high 40 points while also grabbing ten rebounds. Power forward Fabian Franke added an excellent 19 points, 12 boards and five assists, wing Steffen Walde contributed 18 points and six dimes.
The game was basically in the books at half-time, so the third and fourth quarter came down to extended garbage/celebration time. Once the final buzzer sounded, the court was immediately transformed into a stage for an impromptu coronation ceremony involving plenty of dancing, singing and beer showers.
After the final away game at tennet young heroes Bayreuth on April 1, the Regionalliga champions will return home for the official title celebration when they host TSV Oberhaching Tropics on Saturday, April 8, at 6 pm.
